Gondwana, originally Gondwanaland, is the name given to a southern precursor-supercontinent. Gondwana included most of the landmasses in the current southern hemisphere, including Antarctica, South America, Africa, Madagascar, Australia-New Guinea, and New Zealand. South America began to drift slowly westward from Africa about 130 million years ago. Plants in this circular garden—now under construction—will be descendants of species originally common to lands that once comprised Gondwana. |
